Jiu-Jitsu

At Brunswick Martial Arts Academy we incorporate the techniques of Jiu-Jitsu to enhance the students range of motion, thereby teaching a student to not only be able to block, punch, and kick, but also become competent at trapping, controlling, restraining and grappling as well as having a knowledge of empty hand combat against weapons of the street (clubs, knives, firearms, etc.).This aspect of combat is extremely well suited to individuals in the law enforcement and security fields as well as those with a willingness to learn.

What is Jiu-Jitsu?

The term Jiu-Jitsu when literally translated means, technique or art (Jitsu) of suppleness, flexibility, pliancy, gentleness and all renditions of the ideogram (Jui). It is also spelled Ju-Jitsu or Jui-Jutsu.

Judo founder Jigoro Kano traced the artís emergence to between 1600 and 1650. In itís golden age-late 17th to mid 19th century-more than 700 systems of Jiu Jitsu had appeared in Japan.

Unlike most striking arts (Karate, Tae Kwon Do, Tang So Do, Kung Fu, Wushu, etc.) which focus on blocking, punching, and kicking, Jiu-Jitsu techniques focus more on seizing, trapping, controlling and even grappling.
